Every company/firm must have a strong integrated approach to
setting up its goal and targets, an activity that is aligned to involve every
individual of the company to realize its targets set.
Setting up a realistic goal is the key, more of a stepping
stone to attaining great success. The goal must not be too easily attainable
which completely negates the proposition of realizing one’s potential. It must
not be too stretched as well which will allow the company to grow naturally and
in the process know its true potential. The goals must not be set that would
eventually lead to a continuous failure.
G.S vs G.A (Goal Setting vs
Goal Achieved)
Goal setting is the first step towards attaining
business excellence. The companies’ top management must never be bowed by the
doubt of not achieving a goal that is difficult. Goal setting and goal achieved
work in tandem with goal setting being the primary step that may come the
change. It would ultimately define the companies outlook. A difficult target must
be chosen by companies/ firms and then work towards attaining it.
Lets analyse company X’s goal setting strategy vs company Y’s
goal setting strategy :
In the above figure shown, company X has set itself as
target that is easy to attain. And it is able to attain it at the cost of not
being able to fully utilize its potential which is evident in the difference in
gap in goal achieved and potential.
While company Y is setting a target that is difficult to
attain. It has the vision and capability to push itself in order to realize its
full potential.
In this continuous process of goal setting and goal achieving,
company Y will move higher since it is striving to achieve harder and difficult
goals. Company X on the other hand has a laid back approach to the whole
process and hence will lag behind.
Even 'he' sets goals first and then works towards achieving them.
Here's a little video , although a little off-track from management principles but similar ones that apply and can be taken from sport.
